In 2001, President Megawati Sukarnoputri visited President George W. Bush to discuss a new era in U.S.-Indonesian relations that promotes stability and growth. The two leaders vowed equal efforts in building a stronger Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), supporting East Timor, and implementing plans to reform bilateral security policies.
