The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami was one of the deadliest ever recorded. Over 275,000 people lost their lives in fourteen countries. In Indonesia, much of Aceh’s critical infrastructure—including businesses, government offices, schools and hospitals—was destroyed.
The U.S. Government, through USAID, responded immediately to help Aceh recover, especially rebuilding education infrastructure. In the end, Indonesia built back better, enhancing local teacher training facilities and methods, ensuring bright futures for young Acehnese despite the devastation.
