Active volcano Mount Ijen in East Java rests between two densely populated cities, Bondowsoso and Banyuwangi, whose collective population numbers 2.4 million. A sudden eruption would put local residents, miners, and tourists in serious danger.
Working together with USAID and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geo-hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) has trained volcano monitors to use USAID-supported monitoring equipment installed around the volcano. The equipment is part of an early warning system that would save thousands of lives in the event of an eruption.
