Every hour, two Indonesian mothers and eight newborns die from preventable causes. To help Indonesia reduce this burden and save lives, USAID trained health workers in life-saving interventions that improved their ability to respond to obstetric emergencies. In just four years, maternal and newborn mortality rates at USAID-supported hospitals dropped 50 and 21 percent, respectively. Now, more families like Desi’s can anticipate good news following labor and delivery: mom and baby are doing just fine.
